What is Australian Association of Social Workers?

The Australian Association of Social Workers (AASW) is the national professional association for social workers in Australia and the recognised skills assessing authority for social work occupations under the skilled migration system. AASW holds this statutory role under the Migration Regulations and assesses whether overseas social work qualifications, experience, and professional standing meet Australian professional standards.

AASW membership is the credential that demonstrates professional competence in social work for Australian employers and government agencies. For skilled migration purposes, an AASW assessment confirms that an overseas-qualified social worker's qualifications are substantially equivalent to Australian social work education and that they meet the professional standards required to work in Australia.

AASW assesses social workers across multiple specialisations and employment contexts, including clinical social work, mental health, community development, school-based practice, and organisational settings. The assessment process evaluates both formal qualifications and professional experience to ensure applicants can work safely and effectively within the Australian social work regulatory framework.

Which visas require an AASW skills assessment?

Social workers assessed by AASW can pursue several skilled visa pathways, including permanent and temporary residence options.

Subclass 189 Subclass 190 Subclass 491 Subclass 482 Subclass 186 Subclass 494

An AASW skills assessment is a mandatory requirement for all skilled visa applications where social work is the nominated occupation. The assessment is not country-specific; once granted, it is valid across all skilled visa pathways. Social workers with an AASW assessment can apply for permanent skilled migration (189, 190, 491), temporary skilled work visas (482), employer-sponsored permanent residency (186), or regional pathways (494).

How AASW assessment works

The AASW assessment process involves document review, qualification verification, and professional evaluation against Australian standards. The entire process typically takes 8–12 weeks from submission to decision.

  1. Check your eligibility and occupational fit — AASW assesses social workers meeting the core qualification and experience criteria
  2. Prepare your application, including certified documents, university transcripts, employment references, and a detailed curriculum vitae
  3. Submit your application online via the AASW portal with the appropriate fee
  4. AASW reviews your qualifications, work experience, and professional conduct against Australian social work standards
  5. Assessment may include requests for additional documents, clarification of experience, or further information
  6. AASW makes a determination: positive (skills recognised), negative, or conditional assessment
  7. Receive your assessment outcome letter, which you provide to your visa application

Assessment pathways

AASW offers streamlined assessment pathways depending on your qualifications and experience. The most common pathway is the standard assessment for overseas-qualified social workers; specialised pathways may apply if you hold specific credentials or registrations.

Standard Assessment

For social workers with a recognised overseas tertiary qualification in social work (bachelor degree or higher) and relevant work experience. Assessment evaluates qualification equivalence and professional suitability against Australian standards. Typical processing time: 8–12 weeks.

Work Experience Evaluation

For applicants whose qualifications are borderline or from non-standard institutions. AASW evaluates work experience as evidence of professional competence. Requires detailed employment references and demonstrated practice within the social work scope.

Documents required

Documents required vary by pathway but typically include:

  • Certified copies of your bachelor degree or higher qualification in social work or related field
  • Official university transcripts and detailed course descriptions for all relevant tertiary study
  • Employment reference letters from current and previous employers on company letterhead, detailing your role, responsibilities, and duration
  • Curriculum vitae or detailed employment history with dates, positions, and key responsibilities
  • Statutory declaration of work experience (if work history is longer than 10 years or from countries with limited documentation)
  • Evidence of professional registration or membership in your home country (e.g. social work council registration, professional body membership)
  • Police clearance certificate from your country of residence for the past 5 years
  • Character references from professional colleagues or supervisors
  • Copy of your passport (personal identification page)
  • Any additional professional qualifications, certifications, or specialisations relevant to social work practice

All documents must be certified copies unless they are originals. Non-English documents must be accompanied by official English translations certified by an accredited translator. AASW may request original documents for verification at any stage of the assessment process.

Assessment outcomes

AASW issues one of three outcomes:

✓ Positive assessment

A positive AASW assessment means your social work qualifications and experience have been recognised as substantially equivalent to Australian standards. The assessment is valid indefinitely for skilled migration purposes and can be used immediately in visa applications. A positive outcome confirms you meet the professional standards required to practise social work in Australia.

✕ Negative assessment

A negative assessment means AASW has determined your qualifications do not meet Australian standards at this time. You have the right to request a review within 28 days of receiving your outcome letter, providing additional evidence or clarification. You may also reapply after gaining further qualifications or experience.

If you disagree with AASW's assessment, you can request a formal review within 28 days. The review involves reconsideration by a different assessor and may be supported by additional documents, qualifications, or work experience evidence. Review outcomes are final and binding.

Practitioner Note
A common oversight is underestimating the importance of detailed employment references for AASW assessments. References must explicitly describe your day-to-day practice within the social work scope, not just your position title and duration. Vague or generic references are frequently returned for clarification, delaying your assessment by 2–4 weeks. Always brief your referees on what the AASW assesses and ask them to be specific about your professional responsibilities.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does an AASW assessment take?+

Standard AASW assessments typically take 8–12 weeks from submission to decision. This includes initial document review, qualification verification, and any requests for additional information. Priority processing is available for an additional fee and reduces the timeframe to 4–6 weeks. Timeframes may be extended if further documentation is needed.

Can I work as a social worker in Australia while my AASW assessment is pending?+

No. A positive AASW assessment is required before you can legally practise as a social worker in Australia or include the occupation in your skilled visa application. You cannot work in social work roles during the assessment period. Some social workers work in related fields (community support, administrative roles) while awaiting their assessment outcome.

What if my social work degree is from a country not listed on the AASW website?+

AASW assesses qualifications from any country, even if not specifically listed. Submit your qualification for assessment and provide detailed course documentation, transcripts, and work experience evidence. Non-standard qualifications may take longer to assess or may require a reassessment application with additional evidence of professional practice.

Is my AASW assessment valid for multiple visa applications?+

Yes. Once you receive a positive AASW assessment, it is valid indefinitely for skilled migration purposes. You can use the same assessment for multiple visa applications, employer sponsorship, or visa renewal. You do not need a new assessment unless your circumstances change significantly or AASW requests an update.

What is the difference between AASW assessment and social work registration?+

AASW assessment confirms your qualifications meet Australian standards for skilled migration. Social work registration is a separate requirement that occurs after you move to Australia and is required to practise. Some states regulate social work through statutory registration, while others rely on AASW membership. You must complete both processes to work legally as a social worker.
