Employer Sponsorship Requirements
Employers sponsoring data analysts must complete the nomination process with the Department of Home Affairs. They must advertise the position to Australian citizens and permanent residents first (unless they can justify skills shortage) and provide evidence the role is genuine and necessary for business operations. Sponsoring employers must be financially stable and registered with the Department.
They must also provide documentation of genuine recruitment efforts and evidence of the skills shortage—why local workers cannot fill the role.
For 186 sponsorship (permanent), the employer must lodge an occupation nomination followed by a position nomination. They must demonstrate the position cannot be reasonably filled by Australian workers and is critical to business operations. Employers cover nomination and visa processing fees. This pathway is more rigorous but results in immediate permanent residency upon visa grant.
How to apply, step by step
- Confirm the correct ANZSCO code for your occupation. Everything downstream depends on it, and an assessment obtained for the wrong code does not transfer.
- Obtain a positive skills assessment from the assessing authority for that occupation.
- Meet the English language requirement for the visa you are applying for.
- Lodge an Expression of Interest through SkillSelect, claiming only points you can evidence.
- If you are seeking state nomination, apply to the nominating body separately and on its terms.
- Wait to be invited. You cannot apply for the visa until an invitation is issued.
- Lodge the visa application within the period allowed by the invitation, with the evidence for every claim you made.
