Skills demand for Life Science Technician
Demand is the first thing to establish, because it quietly determines the rest: the visas worth considering, the competitiveness of an invitation round, and whether a state nomination is a credible option at all.
Jobs and Skills Australia does not currently assess this occupation as being in shortage. That does not close off a skilled pathway, but it does mean you are competing on the strength of your own claims rather than on the strength of the labour market.
Visa pathways for Life Science Technician
Which visas are available to you depends on which of the government's skilled occupation lists your occupation appears on. The lists are not interchangeable, and being on one of them does not put you on the others.
Sitting on the Short-term Skilled Occupation List means state nomination and employer sponsorship are the realistic routes; the independent skilled visa is not available from this list.
Skills assessment for Life Science Technician
A skills assessment is not a formality. It is the step where an independent authority decides whether your qualifications and experience actually match the occupation you are claiming — and a negative outcome ends the application before it starts.
Fees are set by the authority, not by the Department. The pathways below come from the authority's own published schedule and are reconciled against it. Always confirm the current charge directly with the authority before lodging.
State Nomination for Life Science Technicians
Victoria is the primary nominating state for Life Science Technicians due to its strong biotech and pharmaceutical sector. The state actively seeks skilled technicians for Melbourne's biotech precinct and research institutions. NSW also nominates regularly, particularly for roles in pharmaceutical manufacturing and university research facilities. Queensland sponsors technicians, especially for roles supporting its growing life sciences sector and university research programs.
State nomination requirements typically include a positive VETASSESS assessment, Australian job offer (usually required), and demonstration of commitment to the state. Some states prioritize applicants with relevant Australian work experience.
Regional areas with designated skilled migration programs (under 491 sponsorship) may also nominate Life Science Technicians, particularly university towns and research centers. Check the Regional Migration Planning Authority website for your target region's current requirements.
Your Life Science Technician Migration Pathway

This includes evidence of health (medical examination), character (police clearance), skills assessment, nomination approval letter, and supporting documents demonstrating your qualifications and experience.
