Skills demand for Retail Manager (General)
Whether an occupation is in demand shapes almost everything else about a skilled application — which visas are realistic, how competitive an invitation round is likely to be, and whether a state has any reason to nominate you.
Jobs and Skills Australia does not record a shortage for this occupation at present. A skilled pathway remains open, but the case will rest on your individual claims rather than on the labour market doing any of the work for you.
Visa pathways for Retail Manager (General)
The occupation lists decide the pathway. Each list maps to a different group of visa subclasses, so the first question is always which list — or lists — this occupation appears on.
This occupation appears on the Core Skills Occupation List, which is the list used for the Skills in Demand visa's Core Skills stream.
Skills assessment for Retail Manager (General)
Every skilled application turns on the skills assessment. An independent authority — not the Department — decides whether your qualifications and experience genuinely correspond to the occupation you are nominating, and there is no way around it.
Fees are set by the authority, not by the Department. The pathways below come from the authority's own published schedule and are reconciled against it. Always confirm the current charge directly with the authority before lodging.
Employer Sponsorship Requirements
The sponsoring employer must be an Australian business with a genuine need for a retail manager. The employer first applies to become a registered sponsor (if not already) with the Department of Home Affairs, then lodges a nomination for the specific retail manager position. This process requires the employer to demonstrate they have attempted to recruit Australian citizens and document why local candidates are unsuitable.
For 482 TSS visas, labour market testing is mandatory. The employer must document all applications received, why Australian candidates were rejected, and explain why the sponsored candidate is the best fit. This is an often-underestimated burden: many employers submit minimal advertising evidence, which leads to TSS application delays or refusal.
See current processing times for the subclass 186 visa. Sponsoring employers typically provide employment contracts outlining role, salary, benefits, and conditions. Some employers support visa application costs or relocation assistance, though this is not mandatory.
How to apply, step by step
- Confirm the correct ANZSCO code for your occupation. Everything downstream depends on it, and an assessment obtained for the wrong code does not transfer.
- Obtain a positive skills assessment from the assessing authority for that occupation.
- Meet the English language requirement for the visa you are applying for.
- Lodge an Expression of Interest through SkillSelect, claiming only points you can evidence.
- If you are seeking state nomination, apply to the nominating body separately and on its terms.
- Wait to be invited. You cannot apply for the visa until an invitation is issued.
- Lodge the visa application within the period allowed by the invitation, with the evidence for every claim you made.
