The 186 ENS visa is the permanent residency pathway. Employers can nominate Web Designers directly for PR if they meet labour market testing requirements and pass health and character checks. Most applicants must have worked in the role for at least 2 years—either in Australia on a 482 visa or overseas with relevant experience demonstrating the ANZSCO position level.
Web Designers on STSOL are ineligible for skilled independent (189) or state-nominated (190) visas. The 482-to-186 transition is the standard migration route. There is no permanent skilled independent pathway for this occupation.

Detailed reference letters from employers highlighting specific project outcomes are valuable. If you lack formal qualifications, 5+ years of documented design work experience may satisfy the assessment, though qualifications significantly improve your chances.
State Sponsorship for Web Designers
Web Designers are nominated by several Australian states for 482 and 186 visas, though sponsorship is always employer-driven. New South Wales and Victoria are the primary sponsors due to concentrations of tech companies and digital agencies. Queensland has growing demand, particularly in Brisbane's expanding tech sector. South Australia and Western Australia occasionally nominate designers, but opportunities are fewer.
State sponsorship is not always required for 186 applications if the employer is nominating you directly at federal level. Your migration agent and employer will determine the most efficient pathway. Some employers prefer state nomination for strategic reasons or to reduce processing uncertainty.
Complete 482-to-186 Pathway for Web Designers
- Secure employer sponsorship. An Australian employer identifies you as suitable for the role and agrees to sponsor your visa. The employer must meet sponsorship eligibility criteria and pass background checks with the Department of Home Affairs.
- Obtain VETASSESS skills assessment. Compile your qualifications, employment references, and design portfolio, then lodge your application with VETASSESS. Assessment takes 6–8 weeks on average.
- Employer lodges 482 visa application. Once your skills assessment is positive, your employer lodges the 482 TSS application with Home Affairs, including labour market testing evidence showing they advertised the role to Australian workers.
- Home Affairs assessment and visa grant. The Department processes your application within 8–12 weeks. You may be invited for an interview. Upon approval, you receive a visa grant notice.
- Travel to Australia and begin employment. You arrive in Australia and commence work in your nominated role. Maintain detailed employment records and performance documentation for future applications.
- Accumulate 2-year work history. Work continuously in your nominated role for at least 2 years. Obtain annual employment references and performance evaluations from your employer.
- Lodge 186 ENS permanent nomination. After 2 years (or when you meet eligibility), your employer lodges your 186 permanent nomination. You must still satisfy labour market testing, health, and character requirements.
- Permanent residency grant. Upon approval, you are granted PR. You then have unrestricted work and study rights, and may sponsor family members to migrate.
