Why Web Developers Are in Demand
Australia's digital economy is growing rapidly, and tech companies across Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, and emerging tech hubs are competing for skilled web developers. The shift to cloud-native development, e-commerce expansion, and digital transformation across government and enterprise sectors have created sustained demand for developers with modern stack experience (React, Vue, Angular, Node.js, Python, etc.).
Web developers on STSOL (Short-Term Skilled Occupation List) can access temporary sponsorship via TSS 482. Salaries typically range from AUD 75,000–95,000 for mid-level roles and AUD 95,000–130,000+ for senior developers, depending on location and employer. Sydney and Melbourne offer premium salaries; regional tech hubs (Canberra, Perth) offer competitive packages with lifestyle benefits.
Regional demand is growing faster than metro demand. State-sponsored TSS 482 pathways and regional employer nominations are increasingly common, with IT skills identified as critical in regional workforce plans. This creates a dual pathway: metro tech companies (faster hiring) vs. regional employers (potentially easier nomination).
Your Visa Pathways: TSS 482 & ENS 186
Temporary Skill Shortage (TSS 482): Available if an Australian employer sponsors you on the STSOL list. Valid for 2–4 years (depending on visa conditions). Requires ACS skills assessment, health and character checks, and English language requirements (IELTS 6.0+). TSS 482 does not lead to permanent residence directly, but demonstrates employer commitment and builds Australian work history for later ENS 186 or skilled independent (189) applications.
Employer Nomination Scheme (ENS 186): Direct pathway to permanent residence. Requires employer sponsorship, ACS skills assessment, 3+ years relevant work experience (2+ in current role with sponsoring employer), and English language requirements (IELTS 6.0+). ENS 186 is a single application covering both visa and permanent residency—no waiting period after grant.
Most web developers follow the TSS 482 → ENS 186 sequence: sponsor yourself on TSS for 2–3 years, build employer confidence and work history, then transition to permanent ENS 186. Some employers directly nominate for ENS 186 if you have strong experience and they have proven labour market need.
ACS Skills Assessment Process
The Australian Computer Society (ACS) assesses web developer qualifications against ANZSCO 261212. Assessment evaluates your formal qualifications (bachelor's degree in IT, Computer Science, or related field), work experience (at least 5 years in web development roles), and technical competency. ACS does not test you on code—instead, they review your CV, project evidence, and roleplay interview responses against an occupational profile.
Required documents: certified copies of degree/diploma (with English translation if non-English), resume detailing web dev experience with dates/technologies, references from past employers, evidence of technical projects (GitHub repos, case studies, portfolio links). The assessment typically takes 8–12 weeks. Cost is approximately AUD 680–820 depending on qualification type.
A key step: your application must show you meet the ANZSCO 261212 requirements—not a generic developer, but specifically web development (full-stack, frontend, backend). Clearly articulate the technologies, methodologies, and projects that align with the occupation. Weak evidence of web development experience is the most common reason for delays.
State Sponsorship & Regional Nominations
Web developers are nominated by several states under state sponsorship schemes. NSW (New South Wales) and Victoria nominate web developers regularly under both Skilled Migration and regional migration programs. Queensland is increasingly nominating tech workers as Brisbane's tech sector grows. South Australia and WA also nominate, though volumes are lower.
If your employer is in a regional area (outside metro Sydney/Melbourne/Brisbane), you may be eligible for regional TSS 482 pathways with longer visa duration (up to 5 years) and clearer pathways to permanent residence. Regional employers in tech hubs like Canberra, Hobart, and regional NSW/Victoria are actively seeking skilled developers.
Check the relevant state's Department of Community and Justice or skilled migration website for current occupation lists. Your employer should liaise with state sponsorship contacts if nominating you. Regional nominations typically process faster than metro applications due to lower volumes and clearer labour market need.
Your Visa Pathway: 6 Steps
- Skills Assessment (Months 1–3): Submit ACS skills assessment application with your bachelor's degree, resume, work references, and portfolio evidence. Expect 8–12 weeks to assessment outcome. Cost: AUD 680–820.
- Receive ACS Assessment (Month 3): ACS issues positive skills assessment outcome letter. This is your ticket to visa sponsorship—you cannot proceed without it.
- Secure Employer Sponsorship (Months 3–6): Employer submits nomination for TSS 482 (or ENS 186 if direct permanent path). Employer must lodge Temporary Skill Shortage nomination via IMMI account. Employer costs: AUD 400–500.
- Visa Application (Months 6–9): You apply for TSS 482 visa with ACS assessment, passport, health examination, police certificate, and English test (IELTS 6.0+ or equivalent). Visa application fee: AUD 520–650 depending on family size.
- Health & Character Checks (Months 7–10): Undergo medical examination (chest X-ray, blood tests, vision, hearing). Police certificate must be current from all countries lived in >6 months. These typically clear in 4–6 weeks.
- Visa Grant (Months 10–12): DIBP grants TSS 482 visa. You can now commence work in Australia with your sponsoring employer. Visa conditions restrict work to nominated employer only for 2–4 years.
- Build Work History (Years 2–3): Accumulate 2+ years continuous employment with sponsoring employer. Strengthen your position for ENS 186 by exceeding performance expectations, gaining certifications (AWS, Google Cloud), and building management/mentoring experience.
- Transition to ENS 186 (Year 3+): Employer nominates you for ENS 186 permanent residency. Simultaneous visa application submitted. DIBP grants permanent residence within 6–12 months. You can now work for any employer and sponsor family members.
